". . . it is appointed unto men once to die . . ."

  Hebrews 9:27

Dear neighbor, have you given any thought lately of your approaching death? Yes, I know that death is a topic generally avoided and pushed away when it arises, but that doesn't negate its reality nor postpone the appointment. We are unable to prevent our spirit leaving our body when our hour has come. Death is approaching all who live, and it is closer to each of us than it was a day, a week, a year ago. All our recoveries from sickness and injury are temporary reprieves, not cancellations. We can no more delay the approach of our death than we can delay the approach of the ocean tide. This is because both are under divine jurisdiction. It is God who gives and it is God who takes away. As all the circumstances of our birth are under His control, so all the circumstances of our death are under His control as well—such as the where, the how, and the when of our deaths. Our responsibility is to be prepared for death, wherever, however, and whenever it shall take place. By preparation, I do not primarily mean in temporal or financial matters, but rather, in setting our spiritual house in order. If we do not have our sins forgiven, if we have not repented, if we have not trusted in the sacrifice of God's Son for our salvation, if we have not submitted to God's authority over us in our lives, we are not prepared for our appointment with death. In such a case, death ought to be a fearful and dreadful expectation to us. But if we have received forgiveness of all our sins through faith in Jesus Christ, we can echo with all the redeemed, “O death, where is your sting?” In such a case, death is the means God uses to take us unworthy sinners to Himself, as Jesus said to the malefactor, “Truly I say to you, Today you shall be with Me in paradise.” Yes, today many around the world have gone to be with the Savior. Sadly, many others have begun to reap what they have sown. Friend, please set your house in order.
