"Keep your tongue from evil . . . "

  Psalm 34:13

Here is a good and wise commandment from God. There would be much less contention and trouble among family members, neighbors, and fellow-workers if his commandment were more obeyed. The particular kind of evil speech in view in this verse is gossip and slander, for the next verse commands seeking peace, and peace will not be likely where gossip and slander take place. The Bible says, “The tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. . . It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men who have been made in the similitude of God.” Solomon wrote, “Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles.” And again the Scriptures say, “If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one's religion is useless.” Jesus Christ taught that it was out of the heart that the mouth spoke, meaning that an evil heart produces evil speech, and a good heart produces good speech. He also taught that a good heart was only possible in this sinful world through the new birth produced by the Holy Spirit of God. Our hearts are by nature proud, judgmental, envious, and resentful. Such a heart prompts the tongue to speak against other people, defaming their character, judging their motives, and endeavoring to lower the esteem which others have towards them. This is not doing unto others as we would have them do to us. When Jesus Christ died on the cross for sinners, He purchased the Holy Spirit and His operations and influences for His people. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and self-control. From such a heart good and godly speech will be expressed. We need God's forgiveness for our evil speech, and we need the Holy Spirit to enable us to speak as we should. Christ purchased both for His people. Call on Him today.
