". . . as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her."

  Ephesians 5:25

Husbands are commanded to love their wives “as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her.” When Jesus submitted Himself to be crucified for the church, He “gave Himself for her,” and in doing so gave evidence that He “loved the church.” He laid down His life as a sacrifice to propitiate or appease the wrath of God for her sins. The church is comprised of all the true believers of all ages, from all nations, whose sins are washed away by the blood of Jesus Christ. Those are the objects of His gracious saving love whom He intended to purchase for Himself with His blood. Christ's death was not intended to only make salvation possible, but to actually procure it for each one of the objects of that love. Those for whom Christ died experience a transformation called the new birth which shows itself in a life of faith in the promised Redeemer and repentance from sin. Christ's love is effectual; it guarantees the Holy Spirit's working in the hearts of sinners, whether religious or profligate. The apostle Paul saw his own life change from a persecutor of the church to a minister of the church; he traced his transformation to Christ “who loved me and gave Himself for me.” All for whom Christ died will be born of the Holy Spirit and be forgiven their sins and live in newness of life. This is what Christ purchased for His church, and His death on the cross will not fail to be effectual in the lives of those He savingly loves. “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me,” He said. These are the bride of Christ, the objects of His love, the beneficiaries of His vicarious sacrifice. The church loves Christ because Christ first loved the church. If you love Christ, your love for Him, your faith in Him, and your obedience to Him were purchased for you by Him at Calvary. These are the marks of one who belongs to Christ's Church. If you do not yet know Christ, He will save you from your sins if you call upon Him. Is He now persuasively calling upon you to call upon Him?
