". . . forget not all his benefits . . ."

  Psalm 103:2

What a wonderful infinity of benefits and gifts we receive from the goodness of God through the course of our lives! Not a day goes by without their number being significantly enlarged. Hour by hour we enjoy good things from the Almighty, and He, in turn deserves good things from us—praise, thanksgiving, and adoration. He is altogether worthy of the gratitude and praise we should express to Him in prayer, song, and service. We are prone to forget the benefits we receive from Him and to take them for granted because He is so faithful in renewing many of them to us day after day. We are accustomed to receiving them and enjoying them. If we were not to have them we would quickly sigh, and murmur, and grumble; we would think ourselves ill-treated. But when we do receive the helps and advantages given to us by God we too often fail to appreciate them as we should and do not express our gratitude to the Giver of every good and perfect gift. We are exhorted: “forget not all His benefits”, but our memory is as depraved as the other faculties of our soul, so we tend “to treasure up the refuse of the past and permit priceless treasures to lie neglected.” (C. H. Spurgeon). Also, our memory does not wish to remember the multitude of our past sins and transgressions to remind us that we are undeserving of all the benefits we enjoy. When we fall into trials and afflictions we may groan, “What did I ever do to deserve this?” The answer is: “Plenty.” But on the other hand, when we receive health, strength, food, family, friends, freedom, prosperity,—not to mention the spiritual blessings of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the forgiveness of sins, adoption into the family of God, etc. we should then ask, “What did I ever do to deserve this?” The answer: “Nothing.” These are gifts of God's goodness and mercy, and these attributes of God should be the theme of our prayers and songs of praise to Him. We are unworthy of the least of God's blessings. Let us therefore humble ourselves before the majesty of God and offer sacrifices of praise to Him through Jesus Christ, who is God's greatest Gift of all for sinners. “Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable Gift.”
