“. . . so is a fair woman who lacks discretion.”

  Proverbs 11:22

“As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman who lacks discretion” said Solomon, the king of Israel. The swine in view possesses something extraneous; the woman in view lacks something necessary. The similarity between the two is the common incongruity. It is as unbecoming for a beautiful woman to lack discretion as it is for a swine to be adorned with gold. Both the beauty and the gold are spoiled. In both cases the worthy is joined to the unworthy. God determines our physical features. He distributes beauty among the human race as He distributes wealth: to some He gives much and to others He gives less. Part of the fear of the LORD which is the beginning of wisdom is to accept our physical features as God's will for us. Will the clay say to the Potter, “Why have you made me thus?” Beauty is very often as dangerous as riches. It proves to be a snare and temptation to those who are“blessed” with it. In many cases beauty has proved to be the downfall of its possessor. Among the snares of being attractive is the snare of overestimating its value and importance and underestimating the value of wisdom and discretion. When face and form become more important than sound judgment and discretion, it is like a swine wearing a jewel of gold in its snout. Occasionally there is a rare combination of both piety and beauty. However, if it is a matter of piety or beauty, the Scriptures give the preference to piety. “Favor is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.” Proverbs 31:30. When the apostle Peter spoke to women, he instructed them that their adorning should “not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel. But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.” May God help us all, men and women alike, to be more concerned about the state of our mind and heart in submission to God than about our external appearance. After all, this is one significant sign of true discretion.
