"You are my hiding place and my shield . . . "

  Psalm 119:114

The purpose of both a hiding place and a shield is to provide safety; both are defensive. A hiding place protects one from danger, while a shield protects one in danger. Almost everyone has had experience of the benefit of a hiding place—perhaps from a troublesome sibling, or from a sudden storm, or from an angry enemy. We do not know who wrote Psalm 119, but if it was David, he was well qualified to speak of hiding places and shields for he was a man of war and also the target of a jealous king. Often he found himself avoiding his enemies as they combed the countryside in search of him. Often he took refuge in caves, behind rocks, and wherever he could secure himself. David found safety in such hiding places from the wrath of an evil king and his numerous army. But criminals also look for hiding places. They find themselves on the wrong side of the law and want to avoid the penalties due them for their crimes. Now this is where David, you, and I come in; we are all sinners. And the wages of sin is death and hell. Men cannot hide from God, but many try to find safe shelters from His righteous anger. Some take refuge in their baptism, others in their community service, others in their service in the church, and still others in their financial generosity. But these hiding places are no better than Adam and Eve's fig leaf aprons. Jesus Christ is the only true and secure hiding place from the curse of the law of God which we have often broken. When the blood of the Passover lamb was applied to the lintel and the doorposts of the house, the house became a safe haven—the death angel would not enter for the bloody doorway spoke of a substitutionary death already enacted. When David, you, or I believe on God's promised Lamb whose blood was shed for sinners, then Christ becomes our hiding place. By trusting in His obedience to God and in His sufferings and death for sinners, “we shall be saved from wrath through Him.” God gives His word, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.”

Let us respond to God with David, “You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word.”
