"... the foolishness of God is wiser than men... "

  I Corinthians 1:25

The Lord Jesus Christ sent His disciples to preach the gospel to every nation as the means of saving men and women, boys and girls, from their sins. The apostle Paul summarized this message by saying that he preached "Christ crucified". It is by Jesus Himself bearing the punishment which sinners deserve for their sins that the sinners themselves may be freed from the penalty they deserve. But this message encounters great opposition and rejection by mankind. We do not want to think of ourselves as sinners, nor of what our sins deserve in the way of punishment, nor of God as one who takes account of all our conduct and holds us accountable for our behavior, nor of needing to be saved by someone else - we prefer to save ourselves if we need saving. All of this teaching about sin, and being accountable, and God's wrath towards sinners, and yet His love in sending Another to be crucified as a sacrifice to save sinners is a most unwelcome message. So the apostle said that it is viewed by man as foolishness. This message which he elsewhere describes as "the glorious gospel of the blessed God," is to those who are perishing foolishness. Yet, the apostle says, "the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men." But the lowest manifestation of God's wisdom far surpasses the highest wisdom of human philosophy and intelligence. When God describes lost sinners, He says they "walk in the futility of their mind having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their heart; who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to licentiousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness." The increasing acceptance of all sorts of moral perversity in our day goes hand in hand with a rejection of the gospel as a foolish message, a message no cultured person would think of embracing. But if cultured sinners are to be saved from what is deserved, it is the message of "Christ crucified" which alone is able to make them wise unto salvation, and which alone can powerfully transform them into new creatures. This is the good news of the gospel of Christ.
