"Even what he has will be taken away from him."

Matthew13:12

The Lord Jesus Christ said regarding His teaching: “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” We are held accountable to profit from the spiritual instruction we hear. If a hearer receives the message with faith and repentance, God will give him more instruction, more understanding, and more spiritual prosperity. But if the hearer does not so receive the message, even what he has learned will be diminished. Jesus puts it like this: “For whoever has, to him will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.” If we read the Scriptures or hear them faithfully taught and attend to them, we shall make further attainments in becoming wise unto salvation and unto usefulness. But the converse is true too: he who does not possess in his mind and heart and diligently use the instruction heard, what he does have will be taken from him.As in the sphere of the physical body, so also regarding spiritual instruction and moral behavior, “if we do not use it, we lose it.” There is either gain or loss, no stagnation. The way to keep and retain what we already have is to respond to it receptively and obediently, else we shall not keep it in our possession.Instead of going forward, we shall regress. Man’s love of sin and his self-satisfaction leads him to hear Biblical instruction less than enthusiastically. Spiritual slothfulness leads to spiritual poverty and moral bankruptcy. Those who come under the sound of the gospel but who do not improveu pon it and make advances in faith and repentance and who harden their hearts against both the promises of salvation and the threatenings of condemnation may well be given over by God to judicial blindness and ignorance. Rather than being made wise unto salvation, they shall live in spiritual darkness which becomes ever darker. Each of us is responsible for the Biblical truth we hear and know; to those who spurn God’s truth by being forgetful hearers, He gives over to believe delusions. With what diligence we should hear God’s Word lest what we have be taken away from us! Let us heed this warning from Jesus Christ.
