"Take words with you, and turn to the LORD."

Hosea 14:2

"All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way..." is a description of the human condition. But the divine solution to this condition is: "Take words with you, and turn to the LORD." We are to take words with us as we turn to the LORD. We are to remain mute before the LORD no longer. There is much we should have said to Him long ago, but due to our alienation from Him and our resentment of His commandments which we much dislike, we turned away, every one of us, from Him to our own way and have avoided His presence, and have kept our distance, and have nothing to say to Him. But this is the path, which if continued, leads to ultimate and irretrievable ruin. No one successfully kicks against the Almighty. The wise course is to repent or turn to the LORD and in doing so, to take words expressive of the acknowledgement of guilt and shame, of sorrow and grief, of faith and repentance, of confession and devotion. We are not to take fake words, hypocritical words, or heartless words with us as those of whom Jesus complains: "These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me." Rather, the words taken to God must proceed from a broken heart and a contrite spirit. Such words the prodigal son took when he turned to his father from his own life of folly: "I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.'" The Lord will delight in humble words, contrite words, penitential words, imploring words, submissive words. He will be more pleased with such words spoken out of the abundance of the heart than in presenting offerings of silver and gold, than in the observance of liturgies and sacraments, than in the building of cathedrals and temples. Jesus delights to hear the sorrowful cries of lost sheep, and we are encouraged greatly to know that, "Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." Let us all take words with us, and turn to the Lord. Now.
