"Of how much more value is a man than a sheep?"

  Matthew 12:12

While all life is valuable, not all life is equally valuable. God is the Creator of all life, but from the beginning He did not intend that all life should possess the same privileges or responsibilities. The birds, fish, and cattle are all wonderful productions of God's wisdom and power, but they were not created in the image of God. God has not subjected them to His moral law; He does not have fellowship with them; He does not consign them to everlasting punishment or receive them into glory when they die. Jesus could truthfully say to His hearers, "You are of more value than many sparrows." Animals were made for the enjoyment and use of man. From creation God gave man "dominion over the fish of the sea, over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth." Dominion is use, but it is not abuse. Proverbs 12:10 states: "A righteous man regards the life of his beast; but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel." That there exists much animal abuse is well known; it is a sorry commentary on the character of those who subject animals to unnecessary suffering due to neglect, financial greed, or perverse glee. But this being said, animals are not people. They do not have the rights of people. They are to be subjected to use by people. No one should feel guilty in plowing with horses, eating meat, wearing leather, or fishing or hunting. Jesus Christ ate meat and John the Baptist wore leather. God Himself commanded animals to be sacrificed for offerings in the Old Testament era which were prefigurations of the Lord Jesus Christ, "the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world." These sacrifices taught that "without the shedding of blood there is no remission." But in order to have remission or forgiveness of sins, something more dignified than a sheep or a goat sacrifice was needed. God sent His Son. "Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood He entered in once into the holy place having obtained eternal redemption." "Of how much more value is a man than a sheep?" Especially if that man is Emmanuel, "God with us."!
