"What profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world . . . "

Matthew 16:26

Such is mankind's present condition that what we need most, we desire least. Our pursuits naturally follow our desires, but our desires do not naturally follow our needs. Our natural tendency is to put on the top of our list what should be lower (perhaps far lower, perhaps should not even be on the list), and to put on the very bottom of our list what should be on the very top. What is of lesser importance suffocates the life out of what is of great importance. The cart is in front of the horse instead of behind it. Mankind's alienation from God leads each of us to naturally put first in our lives what should be last, and to put last in our lives what should be first. Before one is born-again, the servant rides on the horse while the master walks behind. In our natural sinful condition, what is important may be one's appearance, or wealth, or social status, or influence. Or it may be immorality, or drugs, or drunkenness, or wealth obtained by dishonest means. The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life are the motivating and energizing forces of fallen mankind and together describe sinful man's pursuits. The welfare of his/her soul is seldom considered and even less seldom pursued. Desires for God's forgiveness of our sins, for reconciliation with God, for a new and holy nature, for communion with the one and only living and true God and with His Son Jesus Christ, and for the eternal kingdom of God are utterly suppressed by the fervent chase after better looks, more money, greater thrills, higher status, and universal notoriety. These are the things we feel we need (hence they are "felt needs"), but our real needs, our significant needs, are very different from them. The Lord Jesus Christ has given us solemn warning in His words: "For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" Even legitimate interests such as employment, sports, travel, and hobbies displace God in our lives until God opens our eyes and hearts to seek Him. The Lord Jesus said, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God". "First."
