"Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth."

  Proverbs 27:1

Scripture writers of the Bible exhort us not to "boast" about the future, even to the point of "tomorrow", for no one knows what will take place on any given day. The word "boast" indicates that the tendency is for people to be optimistic in their prognostications - perhaps regarding their personal lives, their family, their business, the economy, the upcoming season for their favorite sports team, etc. Now, the Bible is not favoring pessimism over optimism. It is not endeavoring to throw a wet blanket over anyone's legitimate hopes or aspirations. The Scriptures are as much opposed to pessimistic prognostications as optimistic ones. But our tendencies are more towards looking forward to prosperity and good times because that is what we want. Thus we read, "Come now, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit'; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.' But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. Therefore, to him how knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin." (James 4:13-17) Our neglect of action, may also be a form of boasting by presuming good things in the future. Those who do not believe in the Lord Jesus Christ nor repent of their sins are by their neglect boasting of a happy tomorrow. Each and every day many people in the world die utterly unprepared for the judgment. Jesus spoke a parable about a rich man who boasted of his many goods laid up for many years of happy retirement, but God said to him, "You fool! This night your soul will be required of you." Many people have made the same mistake today. They did not calculate on death, but death came anyway. They little thought that they would be suffering judgment when they rose in the morning. The Lord controls the future. We must not forget to speak and to act in harmony with this fact. Friend, be wise unto salvation.
