"God is not a man that He should lie, . . . "

  Numbers 23:19

God made man upright, but man did not remain upright. The moral condition of the human race suffered a radical set-back and only God can remedy the human condition. One of the evidences of this moral catastrophe is man's inclination to speak and behave deceitfully, falsely, dishonestly. Lying is commonplace and the evidence that it is so is found in men holding each other accountable through oaths, signatures, and collateral. We are often deceived by what we hear, see, and read. But there is One who never lies, who always speaks truth. His promises and His threats are equally reliable. His blessing and His curse can be taken to the bank. The Bible is the Word of God, and "God is not a man that He should lie." The history recorded in the Bible is true history and the Bible's interpretation of that history is true theology. This is because both the history and the theology are spoken by God. Creation, the fall of man, the Noahic flood, the tower of Babel, the miracles of the Exodus, the promises of a Redeemer, the prophecies of the rise of the Medes and Persians, the Greeks, the description of the Roman Empire, and the birth of the Redeemer at that time are all true. The evidence of the truth of the Bible is in the fulfillment of the prophecies which God made long before the fulfillment. How often do the four gospels point out the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies concerning the birth (when? During the empire after Greece; where? In Bethlehem of Judah; by whom? a virgin), the life (His forerunner? Elijah; His identity? The Son of David; His roles? Prophet, priest and king), the death (by whom? The kings and rulers of the earth; when? During the second temple period; why? To be cursed of God for the sins of others) and the resurrection (when? As Jonah, after three days and nights; from where? A rich man's grave; the certainty? He would not see corruption). "He who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because He has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son. This is the testimony that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son" (I John 5:10,11).
