"... you shall call His name Jesus ..."
Matthew 1:21

After Jesus Christ had been conceived in the womb of the virgin Mary, but before He had been born of her, God directed her husband Joseph as to the naming of the child. God said to Joseph, "... you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." God chose the name of the child and gave the reason for His choice. His name -- Jesus, the reason -- "He will save His people from their sin." "Jesus" is the Greek rendering of the Hebrew name "Joshua" which menas "Savior" or "Salvation." So God was literally saying, "... you shall call His name Savior, for He will save His people from their sins." Thus, God was indicating what purpose the child to be born would fulfill on the earth.

Dear Reader, each of us needs to be saved from our sins. Each of us has provoked the righteous wrath and indignation of God by our many grievous transgressions -- by our pride, our greed, our lust, our selfishness, our ingratitude and discontent, our resentments, our impatience, our dishonoring those in authority over us, etc. How many evil thoughts, desires, motives, imaginations, attitudes, words and deeds have arisen from our sinful hearts! What a fearful and endless debt each of us has to pay unless we are saved from our sins!

The good news of the gospel is that there is a Savior. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes on Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved." (John 3:16, 17). Friend, only Jesus can save you. You cannot save yourself. Call upon Jesus, for "Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be save." (Romans 10:13).
