". . . her sins, which are many, are forgiven . . ."

  Luke 7:47

"I say unto you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven." Friend, find here a wonderful light in the midst of your own moral darkness. The Lord Jesus speaks about a woman who was a notable sinner. She had had her fling, but in time found it had not been wise. Guilt, shame, and fear were the fruits her lifestyle bore. "What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death." (Romans 6:21). Her conscience cried out against her as she remembered her sins, for they were not few, but many. They were repetitious sins, harmful sins, and aggravated sins. She knew what her sins deserved from the righteous judgment of the God whom she had so often ignored and disobeyed. "For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience." (Ephesians 5:5,6). Yet, at the same time, she knew that there was forgiveness with God for all who repented of their sins. She had undoubtedly heard, if not witnessed, the multitudes who had confessed their sins and been baptized under the preaching of John the Baptist. She had undoubtedly sat under the ministry of Jesus, whose feet she was even now washing with her tears. She had discerned that this was not just a man to whom she was listening, but the Son of the living God, the very One against whom she had sinned. She may have heard Jesus address other sinners, such as the sinful paralytic with the words: "Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you." (Matthew 9:2). She may have heard Jesus say to His fellow countrymen: "You will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins." (John 8:24). What we do know is that she did believe Him to be the promised Messiah, for He said to her, "Your faith has saved you; Go in peace." "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16). "Where sin abounded, grace abounded much more."
