"... and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord."

  Hebrews 12:14

There is a widespread impression abroad that God's love for mankind is such that everyone will enter the everlasting kingdom of God and of Christ. It is unfashionable for people to believe that they are accountable for their behavior, and that God will punish impenitent sinners with everlasting punishment. The prevailing mood is that sin is a nonentity, that God requires nothing of us to enter everlasting life, and that divine authority is something that not even God takes seriously. People are to a large degree persuaded that it is possible to live in the most proud, or dishonest, or deceitful, or lewd, or covetous, or violent manner and yet at the same time be assured that they will in the last day be received with open arms (without faith in Christ, or repentance from sin) by a loving God because He loves them. God's love is viewed as that which rids God of His most unwelcome righteousness, which holds men accountable for their behavior. Of course, this whole perspective is contradictory to every page of the Bible. In Hebrews 12:14 we read: "Pursue peace with all men, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord." What is holiness? The word holy has to do with being unique, different, separate. God is holy in the sense that He is utterly unlike His creation. He is eternal, but His creation had a beginning. He is self-dependent, but His creation depends upon His power and sustenance to uphold it. In regards to fallen sinful humanity, He is utterly righteous. All mankind are corrupt but God is not. He is different, separate, peculiar, holy. Men love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil; but God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all. God's love has not done away with His righteousness, with His condemnation of sinners, but it has sent His Son to endure that condemnation for all who will receive Christ as their Lord and Savior. Faith in Christ and repentance from sin puts one on the pursuit of peace with men and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord. "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord."
