"Do you understand what you are reading?"
Acts 8:30

This question was asked by Philip, the evangelist, to an Ethiopian government official who was reading from the Bible about the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. The Ethiopian answered this question with a question: "How can I, unless someone guides me?" He then requested Philip to explain to him what he had been reading.

It is good that the Ethiopian was reading the Bible. Some of what he read, he could not understand, but he knew what question to ask. People who do not read the Bible do not ask questions about its meaning. What you are able to understand in your private Bible reading will to a great extent depend on what you learn through the messages of a minister of the gospel or another knowledgeable Christian. Everyone should attend a church where the Word of God is read, and explained and preached regularly.

In the Bible we learn of the nature or attributes of God, of His creation and preservation and redemption of the world, of His commandments which we are to obey, of His sending Jesus Christ into the world to save sinners, of His fixing a day when He will judge the world by His Son whom He raised from the dead, of the kingdom of God and of hell. These are topics necessary for all to know. The Bible was written for all -- man and woman, rich and poor, educated and unlearned, free and enslaved. Do you understand what you are reading? I would like to urge you, my friend, to read the Bible every day. Pray for the Holy Spirit to give you an understanding heart.
