"... a bad tree bears bad fruit."
Matthew 7:17

Dear Reader, we do what we do because we are what we are. The quality of our root determines the quality of our fruit. "Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles?" Jesus asked. "Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit." Evil thoughts, desires, motives, speech, and actions are produced by an evil nature. Each of us has this evil nature from our conception. "Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me." Psalm 51:5. Our selfishness, ingratitude, discontent, greed, lust, resentment, insubordination, gossip, etc. are the bad fruits our bad hearts produce. Jesus said, "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies." Matthew 15:19.

Friend, the salvation that we all need is one which is able not only to cleanse us from our guilt and sins (our bad fruit), but one which is also able to impart a new nature, a new heart (to deliver us from our evil root). If we had a clean slate without a clean heart, we would only produce another crop of evil behavior. It is this need of a new heart to which Jesus made reference when He said to Nicodemus in John 3:6, 7: "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, You must be born again."

A new nature is not a human achievement, but a divine gift. It is not the result of the efforts of the university, the scientific laboratory, or the government. An evil heart cannot produce a good heart. All of the righteous commands God gives us we are unable to obey. Even coming to Christ by trusting in Him for salvation is beyond us. Jesus said, "No man can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him." John 6:44. Faith in Him is our duty, but it will not be produced by our evil hearts. We need new hearts which only God can give. Only God can open our hearts to respond to His message of salvation. Acts 6:14.
