"All flesh is as grass …."
I Peter 1:24

When the Scriptures would remind us of our physical frailty, our liability to death, our mortal nature, they often refer to us as grass. The human race is compared to a meadow of grassy vegetation which bears attractive flowers, but "the grass withers, and its flower falls away." Our beauty, our intelligence, our physical strength and skill, our occupational expertise, our social influence are as flowers which soon fall off and before long the grass itself is withered and dead. We are told, dear reader, that we are not to think that we shall escape this withering. All flesh is as grass. All flesh--regardless of gender, race, or creed. Regardless of wealth, education, or status. "What man can live and not see death? Can he deliver his life from the power of the grave?" Psalm 89:48. All flesh is as grass--even age is not regarded, for children and teenagers are as susceptible to the forces of death as those in their prime and the elderly. Some stalks of grass are short, and others are tall. Their flowers also vary in strength of fragrance. But short or tall, fragrant or scentless, all are approaching a withering.
Friend, the Scriptures teach us this truth in order that we may prepare for death and our consequent giving an account to God for what we did in life. "It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment." Hebrews 9:27. Jesus Christ was sent by His heavenly Father into the world to save sinners--to bring forgiveness of sins to those who would believe on His righteousness and on His sacrifice on the cross to make satisfaction for sinners. To those who did not believe that He was sent by God for this purpose He said, "…if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins." John 8:24. We shall all die, but let us not die in our sins.
