“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.”

Christ Jesus came into the world. That, of course, is the message of Christmas. How we delight in reading Luke’s account of the historical details of the entrance of Jesus into the world through the virgin Mary in Bethlehem! But what was the reason of His coming into the world? What design did He have in leaving the Father, becoming flesh, and dwelling among men? What purpose was to be served in this loving humiliation? The text above answers truly and simply: “to save sinners.” The Lord Jesus took upon Himself a body in birth that He might lay it down in death as a sacrifice for the sins of His people. The birth of Christ was expressly for the death of Christ, which was expressly for the salvation of sinners; sinners like me and like you. But if Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, from what did He come to save them? Friend, the Biblical answer is very plain. Christ Jesus came to save sinners from sin--from its penalty and its power or dominion over them. Christ Jesus came to save sinners from hell, the penalty of their sins. Until we recognize that is what our sins deserve, we will not think rightly of ourselves nor of Jesus. The reality of hell underlies the birth of the Savior in Bethlehem. “You shall call His name Jesus (which means Savior), for He shall save His people from their sins.” “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Christ Jesus is God’s gift to a world of perishing sinners. His righteous life and wrath-appeasing death is the only divinely appointed way of salvation. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.”
