“Remember Lot’s wife.”
Luke 17:32

The words “Remember Lot’s wife” were spoken by Jesus Christ as a warning against being too attached to our home and furnishings. These are the good gifts of a good God who daily loads us with benefits of our labor. These things are not evil in themselves, but may become so if we turn them into the idols of our hearts. Neighbor, when we are more concerned about possessing and enjoying earthly comforts than possessing and enjoying the forgiveness of our sins and fellowship with God, we know that we have replaced God with His gifts.
When Jesus spoke these words He was speaking of His coming again to the earth. He said, “In that day, he who is on the housetop, and his goods are in the house, let him not come down to take them away. And likewise the one who is in the field, let him not turn back. Remember Lot’s wife.” Even when the Lord returns, the reaction for many will be to act as if “they can take it with them.” They will be more concerned to be with their goods than to be with the Son of God. When God judged the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah for their heinous immorality, He warned Lot and his family to flee and not to look back. Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. Part of her was moving forward, but her eyes were moving backward. Her eyes followed her heart. Friend, beware of loving the blessings of life too much. Through our own corrupt sinful nature, these good blessings may be turned into the cause of our own eternal ruin. Let us each heed Christ’s warning to us.
