“… Immanuel…God with us.”
Matthew 1:23

As the season of the year approaches in which the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ is celebrated, it is important to remember who He is. He is eternal God who, in time, took to Himself human nature. Ever since His supernatural conception in the womb of the virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit, He who always was fully divine also became fully human at the same time. Approximately seven centuries before Jesus’ birth, the prophet Isaiah prophesied, ‘Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.’ ‘Immanuel’ is Hebrew for “God with us.” The man who was to be born of the virgin was God, and He would dwell ‘with us.’ Indeed, He was put to death by crucifixion for His claim to be more than man. When His enemies picked up stones to stone Him, He asked for what good work He was being stoned. They responded He was to be stoned not for a good work, ‘but for blasphemy, and because You, being a man, make Yourself God.’ He did not respond: “No, no, you misunderstand Me.’ They understood Him perfectly, but could not accept His claim to be God with them. Friend, it is because Jesus Christ is man that He is able to be the sacrifice to satisfy God’s righteous wrath for our sins as men. It is because Jesus Christ is God that His sacrifice has infinite value to appease God’s wrath for all of the sins for all who will ever trust in Him for their salvation. The two natures of Christ in His one person is the foundation of all His saving work. That is why it is so important to know who Jesus Christ really is and to call upon Him for His saving mercy.
