"And I gave her time to repent ..."
Revelation 2:21

One of God's great gifts to mankind is time ... time to repent. That each of us is not now enduring what we deserve for our sins is owing, not to our goodness, but to His patience. It is remarkable that God should exercise such patience towards us when we so greatly provoke His righteous wrath with our sinful thoughts, attitudes, words, and deeds. The Lord Jesus Himself urged people to repent saying, "unless you repent you will all likewise perish." Luke 13:3

Friend, if God has graciously provided opportunity for repentance, how unwise we would be to squander that time away in doing everything but repenting! We ought not to reward God's patience with an increase of and continuance of sin. Let us not pervert that which is meant to be the means of obtaining our salvation into the means of increasing our condemnation. Let us value this gift of time from God and use it for the purpose for which it was given us. Concerning this time for repentance, the apostle Paul wrote, "Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness, and forbearance, and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?" Romans 2:4

As we have now entered another year, we should not reason that since we are not yet suffering everlasting punishment, we never shall. How much time do we have to repent? We have, at the latest, until we die. Death forever closes the door of repentance. If we die impenitent, we "die in our sins." John 8:24. Dear Reader, none of us knows how soon that may be. This very evening many will find themselves enduring the righteous judgment of God who never expected to do so when they rose from their beds this morning.
