“… his ears will tingle.”
Jeremiah 19:3

There are times when we hear news which so dismays or distresses us that it puts our minds into a maze. We do not receive the news casually or in stride, but rather we are astonished, distracted, and confounded. In such cases, our ears are said to tingle. When God urges us to repent of our sins, He uses both encouragements and threatening. He assures us of His grace and mercy if we will forsake our sins and trust in the Redeemer He has sent, the Lord Jesus Christ. He also assures us of His indignation and wrath if we will not forsake our sins and believe in the testimony He has given us concerning His only begotten Son. In describing the intensity of His righteous wrath against impenitent sinners, He has said, “Behold, I will bring such a catastrophe on this place, that whoever hears of it, his ears will tingle.” He was speaking of the destruction of the city of Jerusalem which He fulfilled in 587 BC through the Babylonians. We read of the devastation, famine, and suffering which then occurred. For example, “The hands of the compassionate women have cooked their own children; they became food for them in the destruction of the daughter of My people.” (Lam. 4:10). This is the kind of news which God referred to when He had previously threatened, saying, “…whoever hears of it, his ears will tingle.” But, dear reader, the most serious of God’s warnings concern the everlasting punishment of those who refuse to submit to Him. “And cast the unprofitable servant into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” “Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” “And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”
