“Whoever desires to save his life will lose it... ”

Matthew 16:25

Dear reader, self-centered living is counter-productive. When life is a process by which we endeavor to accumulate much money and the things that money can buy, or to gain the applause and admiration of many people, or to enjoy as many of life’s sensual or intellectual pleasures as possible, or to avoid all inconvenience and discomfort, then we are endeavoring “to save” our lives. When we live in this way, we are living for ourselves and no matter how much we shall “save” our lives now , on judgment day we shall lose them--forever. This is what the Lord Jesus meant when He said, “For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.” Rather than endeavoring to save our lives, Christ Jesus tells us that it is in our best interest to lose them. It is both our duty and our privilege to lose our lives for Christ’s sake. To lose one’s life is to willingly endure rejection and ridicule from those who reject the teachings of Jesus Christ. It is to give money to those in need while living live more frugally so this can be done. It is to be content to do good things secretly so as not to attract human praise, but rather to seek only the praise of Jesus Christ who sees and knows all that is done. It is to be thankful and content with whatever earthly pleasures the Lord gives, and to find greater enjoyment in that they come from Christ, than in the pleasures themselves. Friend, only those who lose their lives for Christ’s sake will find them. Jesus said, “What is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” Our eternal welfare is at stake. Let us heed the loving voice of the Lord Jesus.
