“Oh, taste and see that LORD is good... "

Psalm 34:8

The texture of lamb’s ear can best be known by touching this plant, the fragrance of honeysuckle by smelling it, and the flavor of a red raspberry by tasting it. Men may try to describe these things to us through speech or books but only a very limited understanding can be derived about such things from words. The use of our own senses, a first-hand personal experience of these things will provide us with a much fuller, richer understanding than any second-hand description. This is equally true with regard to the goodness of the LORD. If anyone would know what it is like to be forgiven of all sin, to be adopted into the family of God, to be a new creature in Christ Jesus, to have a stony heart transformed into a heart of flesh, to count it all joy when confronted with various trials because of their sanctifying effects, to set one’s affections on things above, to lay up treasure in heaven and not on earth, to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, to be transformed from glory to glory into the image of Christ, to rejoice in hope of the glory of God, to be renewed day by day in the inner man, to eagerly wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, he must himself taste and see by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ. No one can taste for you, and no one can believe for you. “Oh taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him.” Trusting in the Lord is tasting for oneself. But we will not trust in the LORD till we despair of ourselves, till we renounce all trust in our own supposed righteousness, goodness, wisdom, virtue, ability and submit to be saved by His righteousness. My words are limited, so taste and see.
