"... the message of the cross ..."
I Corinthians 1:18

Friend, what do you think of "the message of the cross"? There is a subtle danger of assuming that we believe in and highly esteem the message of the cross, when in fact we may greatly resent and reject it. "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." Even many who revere the symbol of the cross and display it or wear it, would consider the message of the cross to be unwelcome and offensive. To understand why we naturally spurn the message of the cross, we must understand what the message of the cross is.

The message of the cross emphasizes the sinfulness of man. The sinfulness of man is not a popular subject. The purpose of Christ's death was to save us from our sins. No one can proclaim the message of the cross without proclaiming the sinfulness of mankind. No one can receive the message of the cross without acknowledging himself to be a wretched sinner deserving the wrath of God. Again and again the Bible tells us that Christ "died for the ungodly," "was bruised for our iniquities," and "bore our sins in His body on the cross."

The message of the cross also emphasizes our helplessness. Dear Reader, we cannot save ourselves from our sins. We do not have a righteousness to commend us to God. He alone is the spotless Lamb who is able to appease God's righteous wrath and take away sin. The message of the cross humiliates proud sinners, for it says they must look outside of themselves to Another for salvation. "Look to Me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other." Isaiah 45:22
