“For what is your life? It is even a vapor... "

James 4:14

An hour’s observant walk through a cemetery should convince anyone of the truth of the Scripture that one’s life is “a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.” Even those who live longest, live a short life. As a morning mist which the sun soon lifts, or as the momentary visible breath on a cold wintry day, so also our lives are quickly spent. The dates on gravestones reveal that the duration of many a life is not reckoned in decades, or even in years, but in months, days, or even hours. In giving this description of the brevity of life, James is not being morbid, but rather his purpose is to teach us the uncertainties of daily living. The human tendency is to plan life as if there were no death, to plan our lives as if we controlled our future rather than God our Maker. Indeed, life requires plans. But these plans are all subject to the counsel and plan of God. If our plans do not fit into His plan, our plans will not stand. Therefore, first make plans for death and your everlasting state. Many die unprepared to meet God. They did not seek the forgiveness of their sins through the righteousness and death of the Lord Jesus Christ. They died in their sins. Perhaps they intended to look into such things some day. But their lives were concluded more quickly than they planned. Dear reader, have you set your spiritual house in order? Have you been reconciled to God through faith in His Son Jesus Christ? Has your conscience been washed in the blood of Christ so that you are conscious of peace with God? Whatever plans you have, do not pursue them until you are prepared for death, for your plans may never live that long.
