“Looking for the blessed hope... "

Titus 2:13

When sin entered the world, God promised to send “the seed of the woman” who would redeem sinners from their sins. This produced a future orientation in all those who believed His promises. When, in the fullness of time, Jesus Christ was born, we read of Simeon in the temple, “who was waiting for the Consolation of Israel,” and of Anna who “spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem.” Such people were future oriented in that they eagerly anticipated the birth of the promised Savior of sinners. During His earthly ministry the Lord spoke of His approaching death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven and also promised He would come again to gather all His people from all nations to Himself forever. It is these promises of His glorious return that have produced a future orientation in Christians ever since He ascended into heaven. A Christian with faith in these promises should be “looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.” It is at His appearing that the dead shall be raised, the judgment of all men shall take place, the devil and his angels punished, and the kingdom of God brought to perfection. The Apostle Peter wrote that Christians should be “looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God.“ He also said, “we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.” This is the “blessed hope,” that is, the “happy anticipation” of those who have found forgiveness of sins through the righteousness and death of the Son of God. Do you have a future orientation for everlasting life? If not, I hope you will.
