“… than for your whole body to be cast into hell.”
Matthew 5:29

Many people think God is so loving that it is unthinkable that He would condemn unbelieving and impenitent sinners to conscious suffering forever. From the beginning Satan has endeavored to deceive mankind with his words to Eve, “You shall not surely die.” Men love to sin, but hate to suffer. However, God has joined together unconfessed sin with everlasting suffering. Satan continues to do all in his power to deny or suppress the message concerning hell. People do not like to hear about this subject. Too often those who should warn sinners to flee from the wrath to come suffocate the message in silence, lest they should lose their listeners. Very often the perverted message of the gospel is detected not in what is taught, but in what is not taught. When Jesus preached He often warned of everlasting punishment, of perishing, of hell, of the wrath to come, of unquenchable fire. When warning against the lust of the eyes, He said, “If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.” The love of God is seen in the gospel message that God sent His Son into the world to bear the wrath of God for sinners. By His sufferings and death He bore the curse of God’s law and appeased the wrath of God for every sinner who would ever believe on Christ and repent of sin. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes on Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Friend, God’s righteousness requires that sin be punished; God’s love provided a Savior to bear that punishment.
