“… stood a Lamb as having been slain ...”
Revelation 5:6

Jesus is the Lamb. John the Baptist had called Him “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” From the time that sin entered the world until the death of Jesus, lambs were to be sacrificed to God as substitutes for sinners who deserved death themselves. Isaiah the prophet wrote of the Messiah that “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities” and Daniel the prophet wrote of Him saying, “the Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself.” Paul the apostle wrote, “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.” Jesus is the Lamb. The Lamb’s “having been slain” is a reference to His death on the cross. Such a death was for the purpose of satisfying God’s righteous wrath because of sin. Our sins are highly offensive to the Holy God. As “Lamb” teaches substitution, “having been slain” teaches propitiation or appeasement. “Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” “In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.” Only the blood of Jesus Christ can cleanse us from our sins, because only the blood of Christ can quench the righteous wrath of the Holy God with whom we have to do. The Lamb, having been slain, yet “stood.” Here is the resurrection of the slain Lamb. He Himself said, “I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore.” Reader, the Substitute, who appeased God, is now glorified. Everlasting salvation is to be found in Him who is God’s appointed Lamb, who has made full appeasement for all believing sinners. This Lamb, unlike you or me, is without spot or blemish or any such thing. Whoever sincerely calls on Him, will be saved.
