"... you have had five husbands ..."
John 4:18

A woman went to Jacob's well in Sychar where Jesus sat resting. Though she and Jesus had never met before, the Son of God knew the life history of this woman. He knew not only of her natural thirst for water, but also of her thirst for satisfaction and joy in life. Jesus was aware of how empty and unsatisfying her life really was. However full and exciting her life may have appeared to others, there was a great hollow void within her. She thirsted for a more substantial and meaningful existence. Knowing these things, Jesus began to talk with her with wise kindness. He said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here." She responded, "I have no husband." Then Jesus said to her, "You have well said, 'I have no husbnad,' for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly."

Dear Reader, this woman is an example of each of us. In her soul-thirst for meaning, satisfaction, and excitement (in the sense of not being bored with life), she was trying to fill the void with that which can never satisfy. Our alienation from God reveals itself in our many attempts to replace Him with more men, more women, more drinks, more drugs, more food, more money, more cars, more entertainment, more promotions, more ... But it is all futile. There is no substitute for a close daily personal relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. Enoch and Noah walked with God. Abraham was called the friend of God. The only way to God is through faith in the holy life, the sin-bearing death, and the bodily resurrection of the One who spoke with this woman. He alone can fill the void now and forever.
