“… I lay down My life for the sheep.”
John 10:15

The crucifixion of Jesus Christ was in reality an offering of Himself to God for the sins of the world, that is, for His sheep “out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.” His death was not intended to make salvation possible for everybody, but certain to nobody. It was rather intended to purchase redemption for “as many as You have given Him,” “as many as the Lord our God shall call,” “as many as were appointed to eternal life.” These are His sheep whom He “calls by name”, “who follow Him”, and who “will by no means follow a stranger”. Christ endured the curse against all His sheep for their sins and to them there is no condemnation. All Christ’s sheep will hear the gospel, and will also respond to it, for “all that the Father gives to Me will come to Me,” and “No one can come to Me unless the Father who has sent Me draws him.” All Christ’s sheep will participate in the fullness of salvation purchased for them for “This is the will of My Father who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I should lose nothing but should raise it up at the last day.” As the apostle Paul said to Christ’s sheep in Thessalonica, “We are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief in the truth, to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Thus, “Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her.” Christ purchased with His blood the faith, repentance, forgiveness, renewal, perseverance, and glory of His sheep, the church, the ones God gave to Him. Are you one of Christ’s sheep?
