“ Who among you will give ear to this?”
Isaiah 42:23

The state of a person’s heart is revealed by what he gives his ears to hear. What one loves and enjoys and is interested in will be heard, not only with the ears, but with attention. What one hates, and considers insignificant or despicable will be ignored and not heard, or if heard, not heeded. A child who is told to go to bed, but who wants to stay up, will generally not hear the call to get ready for bed. There is an unwillingness to give ear to this parental order. To give ear is to hear with attention and with obedience. God has spoken through His prophets, His Son, and His apostles in the Holy Scriptures. But the heart of man is loathe to listen. God’s indictments, warnings, and invitations are equally distasteful to the heart of sinful man. As the prophet Zechariah said, “They refused to heed, shrugged their shoulders, and stopped their ears so that they could not hear. Yes, they made their hearts like flint, refusing to hear the law and the words which the LORD of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets. Thus great wrath came from the LORD of hosts.” The apostle Paul charged Timothy: “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.” Dear reader, will you give your ears to God? Will you hear His grievances against you, His gospel for you, His invitations to you? “Who among you will give ear to this?”
