“… but rather giving of thanks.”
Ephesians 5:4

Giving of thanks is contrasted with various forms of evil speaking: “neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.” Sins of the tongue are to be mortified by Christ’s followers and replaced with expressions of gratitude for God’s goodness and mercy. All of our bodily members are to be used in obedience to God. Before a person comes to saving faith in Jesus Christ, the sinful human nature reigns as king in the various members of that person’s body, producing much sinful speech and conduct. But when one becomes a servant of Jesus Christ, there is a new Master who reigns over that body. “Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.” Sinful speech pollutes and poisons the listener and does much mischief. God is dishonored by it, and man is defiled by it. But when one becomes a disciple of Jesus Christ, there is an acknowledgement that we are not worthy of the least of the blessings which we receive. There is a humble and grateful spirit which desires to praise God for all of His goodness, faithfulness, and mercies, which are new every morning. The joy of a Christian will manifest itself in a far better way than the one who is yet a stranger to the grace of Jesus Christ. Giving of thanks should be a prominent part of everyone’s speech everyday, but especially of those who have been cleansed from their sins and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit.
