“The small and the great are there ….”
Job 3:19

Death is no respecter of persons. It is innocent of partiality. It brings to the grave every person irrespective of their age, stature, education, wealth, health, beauty, or righteousness. There are many places in life where you will find the small but not the great, or the great but not the small. But if you look in the earth under your feet, you will find “the small and the great are there.” The small in size or age are there. We are told that at the birth of Jesus Christ, “the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to give birth, to devour her Child as soon as it was born.” Though He escaped Herod’s plot, many an infant has died as soon as it was born. Both the young and the old are sown in the earth to await the day of resurrection. Cemeteries bear witness to this fact. The small in influence, wealth, or social status are there. They, in spite of their smallness, cannot slip through the fingers of death. Their social insignificance does not enable them to escape the grasp of the grave. Nor can the great bribe or flatter death to turn away its gaze from them. Many a grave has been filled not only with the corpse, but also with the wealth once possessed by the corpse. When the Scriptures refer to “the small and the great”, it includes all the intermediates between these extremes. All who are between the small and the great are there as well. Thus we read, “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment,” that is, men, as men, regardless of their age or status. Thus, the apostle John wrote concerning the day of judgment,: “And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God and the books were opened.” Are you prepared for that day?
