“This night your soul will be required of you.”

The Lord Jesus Christ spoke a parable concerning a wealthy man who amassed a large fortune from which he promised himself much comfort and enjoyment for many years. Yet while he was rejoicing over this prospect, God said, “You fool! This night your soul will be required of you.” Jesus never gave irrelevant parables. Throughout history millions have erred in the pattern of this rich man. Substantial plans are made and provisions laid up for retirement, but little or no serious thought is given to preparing for death, standing before God in judgment, and eternity. Yet, no one is certain to live until he retires, but death, judgment and eternity are certain. A person who is reconciled to God by faith in the righteousness of Jesus Christ willingly commits his spirit to God when God calls for it. But those whose lives center around money rather than God, and who make large provision for an earthly future find the prospect of death unsettling. They had neither thought of death nor made any preparation for it. They were counting on retirement, not death. So their souls must be “required” of them. They must keep their appointment with death over their objections. A person’s life is not under his own control. We all enter and leave this world according to God’s sovereign plan. It is God who gives, and it is God who takes away. We are foolish if we leave God and His plan out of our reckoning. “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.” “You ought to say, If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” Many are now in eternity who little thought they would be when they rose this morning.
