“…and the government will be upon His shoulder.”

Isaiah 9:6

Seven hundred years before Jesus, Isaiah said, “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder.” Things which men carry, especially heavy things, are often carried upon their shoulders, which are more able to bear the weight and strain. The responsibilities of exercising a righteous and equitable government are ponderous and heavy; one concern of good government is having the upper hand over enemies of the peace and prosperity of the citizens of the kingdom. Selfish enemies of justice and equity have often crushed governors who stood in their way. But this Governor will be competent for the work, and He will not be crushed by the weight of it. Just before He ascended into heaven in His resurrection body to sit upon the throne of His kingdom, He said, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” The apostles were ordered to go and make disciples of all nations and teach them to observe all that Christ commanded. The citizens of Christ’s kingdom are blessed by His government, but those who say, “We will not have this man to reign over us” (Luke 19:14) will be crushed by this Governor. “She bore a male Child who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron. And her Child was caught up to God and His throne.” (Rev. 12:5). His forefather David said of Him, “You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.” (Psalm 2:9). Who is this good and righteous Governor? “And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Are you one of His citizens, or one of His enemies?
