“For He spoke, and it was done.”

The voice of God is the voice of authority. When He commands an event to take place, it takes place immediately. We read, “And God said…and it was so,” over and over again in the Biblical account of creation. How impressive is the simple record of the Almighty bringing the ordered universe into existence “by the breath of His mouth.” The Psalmist makes reference to this when he sings, “For He spoke, and it was done.” The Son of God, who by His word made all things, became man and was born of Mary in Bethlehem. In the course of His ministry He performed many miracles by His authoritative command. When a great windstorm arose on the Sea of Galilee, He rebuked the wind, saying, “Peace, be still!” When a deaf person was brought to Him, He put His fingers in his ears and said, “Be opened.” He took the hand of a twelve year old girl who had died and said, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” At the tomb of Lazarus He called, “Lazarus, come forth!” In each case, His word of authority was effectual. Other historic Biblical examples could be listed, but one which is yet future, and which involves each of us, Jesus described, saying, “the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth--those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.” The One who spoke the universe into existence will speak us out of our graves. He is the One who died on the cross that we might have everlasting life through faith in Him. Friend, if we call upon Him with faith
and repentance now, we will not have to fear when He calls for us at the resurrection.
