"You must be born again."

“You must be born again” said Jesus (a Jew) to Nicodemus (a ruler of the Jews). But His words apply to everyone regardless of nationality or religion. Many people, like Nicodemus, are confident that the religion into which they were born puts them in good stead with God. This is the error Jesus is contradicting in these words to Nicodemus. Something more, something personal must happen to a person in order to have salvation from his sins. Regardless of which religion or denomination we stand connected by birth, everyone must be born again to enter God’s kingdom. Like the first birth, the new birth is not something a man does, rather it is something that is done to him. A child of God is “born of God.” When people hear the gospel of Jesus Christ and are told they need to repent and trust in the righteousness of Christ alone to save them from their sins, they inevitably reject the message. The love of sin is strong in our hearts, and we do not like to
hear God’s description of our proud, lustful, selfish hearts. We would ever remain unbelieving and impenitent if it were not for the new birth. The new birth is God’s sovereign grace which changes the heart and makes it new. As the first sign of life from a newborn is its crying, so the first sign of one born again is to call out to Christ for salvation. The new birth manifests itself in faith and repentance, and God forgives and saves every sinner who believes and repents. The new birth produces conversion, and conversion produces salvation. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
