“... do not let sin reign in your mortal body ...”

Each of us is entrusted with a physical body which we are to use in serving God. When God made man, it was that man might glorify God and enjoy Him forever. God's commandments were impressed upon man's conscience, and man knew that he was not to use his bodily members in lying, stealing, murdering, fornicating, or committing any other sin. Rather, man's body and spirit were to be used in rendering unto God the honor due unto Him in obeying His beneficial and equitable commandments in the whole of life—in work, worship, domestic life, social relationships, etc. However, even in man's first disobedience to God, not only was his spirit involved in rebellion, but his body participated as an accomplice in that disobedience as the hand partook of the forbidden fruit and as the mouth devoured it. Ever since, sin has reigned in man's now mortal body. From childhood our bodies are used by us to dishonor God in ever so many ways. The health and attractiveness which He gives us are turned by us against Him and used in vanity, immodesty, immortality, thievery, gluttony, drunkenness, falsehood, slothfulness, and a host of other sins. God says, “Their throat is an open tomb; with their tongues they have practiced deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips; whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood.” But all of this is radically altered when a person becomes a true disciple of Jesus Christ. To each disciple God says, “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.” Our bodies will suffer the wrath of God in everlasting punishment along with our spirits unless our sins are forgiven. And what can wash away our sins? As the hymn says, “Nothing but the blood of Jesus.”
