"Why do the nations rage?"

When people are upset, they cause a clamor and a fuss. Few things upset people more than someone else's authority over them. When nations rage, they want a different government, different laws. The laws under which they live are usually seen to be too restrictive, too confining. There is a desire for greater liberty. Sadly, all of this is not only true of man-made laws, but it is also true of mankind's reaction to the law of God. David wrote of this in Psalm 2, saying, “Why do the nations rage and the people plot a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, 'Let us break their bonds in pieces and cast away their cords from us.'” God's commandments are viewed even by the kings and rulers of the earth as unwelcome bonds and cords which restrict their freedom (of greed, of lust, of oppression, of speech, etc.) People and rulers alike chafe under divine commandments which insist on laborious sweat of the brow, heterosexual marriage, marital fidelity, truth, honesty, frugality, contentment, self-denial, and subjection to parents, husband, employer, and magistrate. The laws of the LORD and His Anointed (literally, His Messiah, a reference to Jesus Christ) are a great burden to man's sin-loving heart, and consequently, the nations rage. But this rage ceases in an individual's life when God draws him or her to saving faith in Jesus Christ. Everyone who truly trusts in Him will say with the apostle John, “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.” Or, will say with the apostle Paul, “I delight in the law of God according to the inward man.” Or, will agree with Jesus Christ Himself, who said, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Friend, how we react to God's laws is an indicator of whether we are lost or found.
